Loneliness is linked to around 871,000 deaths a year
deaths a year are linked to loneliness, around 100 every hour.
The WHO links loneliness and social isolation to this many deaths annually. Connection is a health issue, not only a feelings issue.
Around 871,000 deaths a year, close to a hundred every hour, is the figure the World Health Organization attaches to loneliness and social isolation. It is the kind of number that can either frighten you or free you, and we would rather it freed you. It is not saying that being lonely will kill you this year. It is saying that connection, at the level of a whole population, behaves like a genuine ingredient of health, on a par with things we already take seriously.
The mechanism is not mysterious. Isolation raises stress and keeps it raised. It disrupts sleep. It makes people less likely to eat well, move, or seek help early when something is wrong. Spread across billions of people, small effects like these add up to a large toll. That is what a figure like 871,000 is really describing, not a single cause of death you could write on a certificate, but the long shadow that a lack of connection casts over health.
The reason this should steady you rather than scare you is that it points at something fixable. We cannot undo most of what shortens a life. We can change how connected a person is. A regular phone call, a group that expects you on a Tuesday, a friend who notices when you go quiet, these are not sentimental extras. On the evidence the WHO gathered, they belong in the same conversation as the other things we do to look after ourselves and each other.
The Tribe takes that seriously without overclaiming. We are not a health service and nobody here is a clinician. What we are building is the ordinary, repeated contact that the research keeps pointing back to, the being expected somewhere, the being missed when absent. It is early, and we would rather you helped us build it than believe it is already finished. A number this heavy is the best argument we know for starting now.

A number is a person, repeated.
Behind this number are real people who came home and had nobody to tell about their day. The Tribe is being built so that fewer of them do. It is early, and we are honest about that, which is exactly why being one of the first matters.
