AFC Wimbledon: a club its fans rebuilt in nine years

A club really can be rebuilt from nothing by the people who love it.

In 2002, Wimbledon's supporters were told their club was being moved away to another city, dozens of miles from the community that had followed it for generations. Instead of following it or giving up, they started again. They formed a new club from scratch, held open trials to find players, and placed it under the ownership of a supporters' trust that would keep the fans in control. Most people expected a gesture. It became one of the great comeback stories in English sport.

Within nine years, that fan built club had climbed back into the Football League, the same level the old club had been dragged away from. It did it without a billionaire, powered instead by volunteers, small investments, and people who simply refused to let their belonging be relocated for someone else's convenience. The nine years matter as much as the destination, because they show this is not a fairy tale that happens overnight. It is ordinary persistence, repeated season after season.

What makes the story useful, rather than only moving, is that it was built into the structure. Because the fans owned the club, no single owner could sell it, move it, or gamble it away again. The thing that had been done to them once was made impossible by design.
