One in six people in the world is affected by loneliness

people worldwide is affected by loneliness.

What this number means

Not a fringe experience. Roughly one person in every six, in every region of the world.

One in six is not a small, unlucky minority. It is a share so large that in any street, any workplace, any group chat, the odds are that someone is quietly carrying it. The World Health Organization did not reach that figure by asking a handful of people in one country. It drew on evidence from across the world when its Commission on Social Connection reported in 2025, which is why the number is worth taking seriously rather than shrugging off.

If you are the one in six, the most useful thing this figure can do is take the shame out of it. Loneliness is often experienced as a private verdict on your own worth, as though everyone else worked out how to belong and you missed the lesson. The scale of the number says otherwise. Something this common is not a character flaw. It is a condition of modern life, produced by how we live now, by how far we move from home, how much we work alone, and how thin the ordinary meeting places have worn.

It also matters that the WHO counts loneliness as a health issue and not only a mood. When roughly a sixth of humanity is affected, the cost shows up in bodies and not just in feelings, in sleep and stress and the illnesses that follow. That reframing is quietly hopeful, because health problems have solutions, and this one is largely about circumstance. Circumstances can change.

This is the exact gap The Tribe is being built to close, and we will say plainly that it is early. We are not claiming to have solved anything one in six people feel. We are building a place where being known by a few is the whole point, and asking people who recognise themselves in this number to help build it rather than wait for it. If that is you, being one of the first is not a consolation prize. It is how a place like this begins.

Where this figure comes from. World Health Organization, “Social connection linked to improved health and reduced risk of early death”, 30 June 2025. Read the original source. Every figure on this site is one we have read in the source it came from, never invented or rounded to make a point.

A number is a person, repeated.

Behind this number are real people who came home and had nobody to tell about their day. The Tribe is being built so that fewer of them do. It is early, and we are honest about that, which is exactly why being one of the first matters.
