What counts as an animal sanctuary?
A sanctuary is a place that takes in animals who need refuge, farm animals, wildlife, or former pets, and cares for them rather than selling them on for profit. Some also rescue and rehome. What they share is putting the animals' welfare first.
How can I help if I cannot adopt or foster?
Plenty of ways. Sanctuaries almost always need practical help: mucking out, repairs, transport, admin, fundraising, or simply steady small donations and sharing their work. Reliable time is often worth as much as money.
How do I know a sanctuary is genuine and well run?
Look for openness: clear accounts, visits welcome, animals that look well cared for, and honest answers about how they operate. We do not vet or verify the places listed here, so please do your own checks before giving money or turning up, and trust what you see in person.
Do I need experience to volunteer at one?
Usually not. Most sanctuaries will show you the ropes and are glad of willing hands for everyday jobs. Be honest about what you can and cannot do, start small, and build from there.
Is the list of sanctuaries here complete?
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. It is early and grows as people add places they know, so it is a starting point, not a full directory. If a sanctuary you trust is missing, you can add it.
