How many football supporters' trusts are there in the UK?

There are more than 140 supporters' trusts across England, Wales and Scotland, most set up to give fans a democratic say in their club.

What this number means

When supporters organise, they stop being customers and start being owners.

More than 140 supporters' trusts now exist across England, Wales and Scotland. A trust is not a fan club or an online forum. It is a formal, democratic body, one member one vote, set up so that supporters can hold shares, sit on boards, and in some cases own their club outright. The number matters because it shows fan ownership is not a romantic idea a few idealists talk about. It is an established, legal, well worn path that thousands of ordinary people have already walked.

Trusts are often born out of fear or anger, in the weeks when a club is sold to the wrong person, or told it might not survive the season. But the ones that last turn that panic into something steady, a structure that keeps supporters in the room when decisions are made, not just in the stands when the damage is done. That is the shift the figure represents, from being the people a club is done to, to being the people a club is run by.

You do not need to be wealthy for this to work, which is the part most people find surprising. Trusts pool small amounts from large numbers, so a few pounds a month from thousands of members becomes a serious stake. It is the same principle behind everything The Tribe is trying to build, that ordinary people, acting together and openly, can hold something none of them could hold alone. Belonging and ownership turn out to be closely related.

We point to these trusts because they prove the model before we ask anyone to trust ours. The Tribe does not run a club today, and we are honest that the fan owned team we want to help build is still ahead of us. But 140 trusts are 140 reasons to believe it is possible, and an invitation to be one of the first to do it here rather than waiting to read that someone else did it somewhere else.

Every figure on this site is one we have read in the source it came from, never invented or rounded to make a point.

A number is a person, repeated.

Behind this number are real people who came home and had nobody to tell about their day. The Tribe is being built so that fewer of them do. It is early, and we are honest about that, which is exactly why being one of the first matters.
