About one in five children in England has a probable mental health problem

In England in 2023, 20.3% of eight to 16 year olds had a probable mental disorder, about one in five children.

What this number means

The worry parents carry is not imaginary. Even before adulthood, close to a fifth of children are already struggling with their mental health. That is a reason for early, practical care rather than alarm, and it is something a community around a family can help carry.

When NHS England and the Office for National Statistics measured the mental health of children and young people in England in 2023, they found that 20.3% of eight to 16 year olds had a probable mental disorder. About one in five. Among older teenagers the share was higher still, 23.3% of 17 to 19 year olds, and 21.7% of 20 to 25 year olds. This is one of the most careful surveys of its kind, which is why the figure is worth taking seriously.

For a parent, a number like this can land hard, so it helps to be clear about what it says. A probable mental disorder is not a life sentence and it is not a verdict on anyone's parenting. It means a child is showing enough signs of difficulty that they would likely benefit from support, and the great majority of those difficulties respond to early, ordinary help: a listening adult, a steady routine, the right professional when it is needed.

The figure also explains something about the worry parents carry. The fear for a child's wellbeing is not abstract or overblown. One family in five is living some version of it right now, often quietly, often while assuming the family next door is coping fine. That assumption is usually wrong, and it is part of what makes the worry so lonely.

The Tribe is not a mental health service and will never pretend to be one, and any child who is struggling deserves proper professional help, freely available through the NHS. What a community can honestly offer is the thing around that help: other parents who understand, company for a family that feels isolated by a child's difficulties, and a place where none of it has to be hidden. We are early, and we would rather build that with you than leave anyone to carry it alone.

A number is a person, repeated.

Behind this number are real people who came home and had nobody to tell about their day. The Tribe is being built so that fewer of them do. It is early, and we are honest about that, which is exactly why being one of the first matters.
