Money and worry 46%

Debt and mental health problems go together

of people in problem debt also have a mental health problem.

What this number means

Debt and distress are tangled together. Roughly half the people in serious money trouble are carrying a mental health problem too.

The Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, which studies exactly this overlap, finds that forty-six percent of people in problem debt also have a mental health problem. Almost half. Debt, in other words, is rarely just a spreadsheet in trouble. For a huge share of the people in it, it comes wrapped together with anxiety, low mood or worse, and the two are hard to separate.

The same body of research shows the relationship runs in both directions. A large majority of people with experience of mental health problems say their financial situation has made their mental health worse, and a majority also say their mental health has made their finances worse. Being unwell makes it harder to open the letters, make the calls and hold down the income that keep debt at bay, and the debt then feeds the very distress that started the slide. It is a loop, not a line.

It is worth being careful with a figure like this rather than alarmed by it. It does not say that debt makes people unwell or that unwell people are bad with money. It says the two problems keep close company, which is a reason for compassion, not blame, and a reason to treat someone in debt as a person under strain rather than a person who failed. Most people in problem debt did not spend their way there. They were caught out by an illness, a lost job, a rise in the cost of the basics.

The practical hope buried in this is that help exists and, for debt, the good help is always free. Charities and services will talk anyone through their options without cost or judgement, and no one should ever pay to be told what they are owed or what they can do. The Tribe cannot give financial advice and will not try to, but it can be a place where the shame around money loosens enough for people to reach for that help sooner, and where no one has to sit alone with a problem that half the people in it are also carrying quietly.

A number is a person, repeated.

Behind this number are real people who came home and had nobody to tell about their day. The Tribe is being built so that fewer of them do. It is early, and we are honest about that, which is exactly why being one of the first matters.
